What is Hydrogen?
- Hydrogen is a very abundant atom in the universe, but it is not created naturally as a gas on Earth. It needs to be combined with other elements.
- Hydrogen is also found in many organic compounds notably the hydrocarbons that make up many of our fuels like gasoline, natural gas, methanol, propane
- Hydrogen is very high in energy, yet an engine that burns pure hydrogen produces almost no pollution
- NASA has used liquid hydrogen since the 1970s to power the shuttle’s electrical systems, producing a clean byproduct, pure water, for the crew to drink.
How is Hydrogen Energy Made?
- A fuel cell combines hydrogen and oxygen to produce electricity, heat and water.
- They are promising technology to use for heat and electricity for buildings, also as an electrical power source for electric mothers propelling vehicles.
Cost
- The cost of hydrogen of $4 to $12 per kilogram is equivalent to gasoline at $1.60 to $4.80 per gallon
- Fuel cell vehicles though (they run on hydrogen) are currently more expensive than conventional vehicles
Fuel Cell Vehicles: “Toyota says it has reduced the cost of fuel cells significantly enough to sell hydrogen cars for under $100,000. Hydrogen cars could greatly reduce greenhouse gas emissions. They emit no carbon dioxide or any other pollution from their tailpipes.”

Conventional Vehicles: Regular cars can range from $20,000 and up it really depends on the car
